PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is one of the most established non-surgical treatments for early-stage hair loss — but not all PRP is processed the same way. At New York Hair Transplant, we use the EmCyte PurePRP® SP system with the Sapphire series centrifuge, paired with local anesthesia for a comfortable in-office experience.
What PRP Does
PRP uses concentrated platelets from your own blood to support hair growth and scalp health. When activated, platelets release a range of growth factors — including PDGF, VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, and IGF-1 — that help stimulate weakening follicles, improve blood supply to the scalp, and extend the active growth phase of the hair cycle.
Why the Centrifuge System Matters
The step that separates a good PRP treatment from an average one happens before the injection ever begins: how the plasma is processed. We use the EmCyte PurePRP SP system processed through our Sapphire series centrifuge, which is engineered to deliver a consistent, high concentration of platelets in every draw.
Consistency matters here. A centrifuge system that under- or over-processes a blood draw can mean the difference between a therapeutic concentration of growth factors and a diluted one. The EmCyte system is designed to minimize that variability, so every patient gets a reliably concentrated PRP preparation — not a guess.
What to Expect on Treatment Day
A PRP session at NYHT typically takes 30–60 minutes from start to finish:
- Consultation & preparation (10–15 min) — we review your progress and goals, then draw a blood sample.
- PRP processing (10–15 min) — your blood is processed through the EmCyte Sapphire centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma.
- Numbing & injection (20–30 min) — local anesthesia is applied for comfort before PRP is injected into targeted areas of the scalp.
- Aftercare (5–10 min) — we review post-treatment instructions, and you’re free to resume normal activities the same day.
Because we use local anesthesia rather than relying on topical numbing alone, most patients describe the injections as mild pressure at most — not a painful procedure.
Who PRP Works Best For
- Early-stage male or female pattern hair loss
- Diffuse thinning without fully bald patches
- Postpartum, stress-related, or seasonal shedding
- Patients preparing for or recovering from a hair transplant
- Anyone looking to maintain or boost the density of their existing hair
Like exosome therapy, PRP requires active follicles to work with — it won’t regrow hair in areas with no remaining follicles. For those areas, Manual FUE or ARTAS® iX Robotic FUE is typically the better fit.
Results Timeline
Most patients complete an initial series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Early improvements in shedding and hair quality are often noticeable by sessions 3–4 (around months 2–3), with more visible thickening by sessions 5–6. Maintenance sessions every 4–6 months help sustain results long-term.
PRP or Exosomes?
PRP uses your own blood and delivers a moderate concentration of growth factors over more sessions. Exosome therapy, using our AMP Biologics-derived solution and the Dr. Roth Method, delivers a significantly higher concentration in fewer visits. We’ll help you decide which — or which combination — makes sense for your case during your consultation.
